The look and feel of a site, and its usability are key to profiting from your web site. Occasionally, web designers, developers and techfolk are blinded by new technologies, and overdo it.

Some of the latest technologies can be a barrier to being listed advantageously in the search engines. Some effects, and structures become difficult for the average user to navigate, and you lose visitors that otherwise would have purchased from you.

Spiders and on-the-fly

Of special note are dynamically generated web sites - web sites build from a database. As they are created "on-the-fly", search engine spiders have a hard time navigating and indexing dynamic pages. When they do index the pages, there is very little control over what is indexed, compared to what the user will see when they arrive from a search result link. These are complex issues, and they need to be addressed on a case by case basis.

We've known some fabulous designers, and development wizards who can build incredibly technical sites - sometimes, at the expense of usability. They cannot be expected to know all the issues of usability, and "findability".
